UX COPY/CONTENT DESIGN

sophia kercher

I like to say I was a UX Writer and Content Designer before it was a thing. I started my career in journalism translating print publications into digital media products. I've worked on projects for media giants like Warner Bros., TBS/TNT, the New York Times, and for major tech companies like Google and Microsoft. I’m based in Los Angeles, and love all things California.

Currently, I'm working on contract as a Content Designer for Microsoft creating UX copy for a cutting-edge project for the Microsoft 365 team. Our team’s work was recently spotlighted by Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella in his keynote speech for the 2024 Microsoft Ignite conference. (If you want to go deep, it’s introduced at roughly the 20-minute mark here).

My Process

As a UX writer, I create clear and concise text for digital products. I consider myself a "tour guide" for tech products creating all the necessary sign posts at each stop. My UX copy helps users reach a specific goal, whether that involves navigating a webpage with ease or filling out a form.

Below are UX writing case studies for Kumospace, Los Angeleno, and details of recent work at Google.

Case Study: Kumospace

Project: Kumospace is an interactive virtual chat platform that hosts events and remote offices in an immersive video game-like setting. The company's mission is to boost productivity and connection for remote teams.

Role: Lead content and UX writer collaborating with a product designer, customer service team members, marketing lead, and engineering team.

Challenge #1: Kumospace is a lesser-known SaaS product with video game-like settings. Prospective users needed to know why our virtual chat platform is more interactive than alternatives to platforms like Zoom. The Kumospace team initially offered customized rooms but users didn't like taking the time to create the virtual spaces.

Solution: The team decided to offer templates of our most-used spaces on a Spaces landing page. The Spaces landing page offers ideas for how and why users use Kumospace to deepen online connection and productivity.

Work: On this project, I wrote headers and subheaders for each space, including our Office, Beach, and Classroom templates, to engage and educate users on Kumospace's offerings.

On corresponding pages for each space, I created thoughtfully tiered text to highlight the benefits of each space along with microcopy that detailed powerful remote work tools such as a white board. I also added customer quotes directly from my own user research/user interviews to build trust with users.

Results: The Spaces pages helped the sales team sell more subscriptions as they could point to specific tools and use cases. It also helped the team craft a new dialogue for selling and marketing Kumospace as a productivity tool.

Challenge #2: Prospective users needed to know how and why to use Kumospace's immersive virtual chat platform for online events an alternative to platforms like Zoom.

Solution: A Customer Stories page featuring examples of how the likes of NASA and Google hosted successful virtual events and office spaces on Kumospace.

Work: The customer service team connected me with users. I interviewed them, wrote microcopy and long copy to highlight the most useful online office spaces and interesting events on Kumospace’s website. I worked with the product designer to champion the virtual events on Kumospace on our Customer Stories page.

Results: The result was two-fold: Kumospace gained invaluable feedback from customers at companies such as NASA and Google, and the sales team was able to gain more business subscriptions by sharing specific use cases now documented on the site.

CASE STUDY: Los angeleno

Role: I led UX copy and all of editorial for Los Angeleno, a local news and culture start-up publication. I oversaw all the website content including crafting taglines for the website and microcopy site-wide.

Challenge: As newcomers to the L.A. media scene readers had to understand our hip and hyperlocal news and service journalism immediately.

Solution: I worked with a designer to craft pop-up pages for events and newsletter CTA buttons. (Pictured on right).

Results: 10K+ readers signed up for our weekly newsletter and our events regularly reached capacity.

Recommendations

I worked with the Google search team on a confidential, high-profile project at the intersection of technical writing and content design. Full case studies are unavailable but I’m happy to chat generally about my work, which involved collaborating with UX writers, technical writers, and content strategists.

Here’s what some of my colleagues have said about our work together:
